Too much hype? (Discussion)

JohnPhilipGreen saidSun, 25 Jan 2009 13:16:57 -0000 ( Link )

No one is more excited about Obama’s administration than I am. And I’m encouraged by the start he’s got off on… but is anyone else concerned that there is just a little too much hype? I mean, the multitude of problems facing the US are just so great… he invariably won’t be able to solve all of them. What then?

I am excited for the administration as well, and Obama is a personal hero for me. But I agree that there is too much hype, it seems like everyone’s cashing in on the new president – from plushies to hit songs, but I guess that’s good for their economy too. :P

I think the global atmosphere has become extremely excited – I suppose this is a good thing. Hopefully after all the buzz settles, we can separate this “movement” of sorts and his charismatic personality from the actual politics and policies. I’m glad he’s an inspiration to people, but they should not just know that they believe in him, but why they believe in him.

Too much hype – ya, you could say that. Maybe I am also taking advantage of it by creating this community:) But I would like to think of it as a lot of ‘positive energy’ and ‘momentum’. And I think this positive momentum is necessary if Obama needs to solve most of the issues he is facing….

Tiffany – you make a good point – that’s the very aim of this community – to understand Obama better and how he has managed to overcome odds so far and how he really does it! Unfortunately I am finding it difficult to cope up with Obama…

Where there are heroes, especially one as charismatic as Obama, there will be hype. I think, in this case, it obviously reflects the very real need of Americans, and indeed the world, to have hope and optimism in very difficult times. Although expectations are very high, and everyone references that point, all but those critical of anything he does, I believe, will be willing to accept the best he can do, recognizing it won’t meet all expectations. Whatever he is able to accomplish will be moving toward something better than the US has right now. He is intelligent, has a great team and needs time. Some will be willing to give him that

I think it’s good that Obama has created a lot of excitement among us about politics, but it’s definitely not a great idea to get people’s hopes up, because the chances of him solving all the problems he’s facing are slim, so it will only leave people feeling disappointed. But he seems like an incredibly capable person, so we might be surprised!
